If you’re transitioning into a Citation or Challenger, you’ll likely encounter two kinds of documentation: the manufacturer’s own AFM/POH, and a FlightSafety Pilot Training Manual (PTM). They serve different purposes, and understanding that difference will make your training a lot more efficient.

Why FlightSafety Manuals Exist Alongside the OEM Documentation

FlightSafety International is the training provider most business jet operators use for type-rating and recurrent training, operating its simulator programs under FAA Part 142 certification. Because a Part 142 training center delivers structured, syllabus-based instruction rather than just aircraft reference material, FlightSafety builds its own training manuals around each aircraft type — organized the way an instructor teaches the system, not necessarily the way the OEM manual is organized.

That’s why a FlightSafety PTM is such a useful companion to the AFM: it walks through systems, limitations, and procedures in a training sequence, often with the diagrams and memory-item logic instructors actually use in the simulator.
