August 20, 2026Every operator knows the AFM is non-negotiable for flight. What’s less obvious is that the maintenance manual behind the scenes carries just as much legal weight — and flying with an outdated revision can put your maintenance program out of compliance without anyone realizing it until an inspection.
The Regulation Behind It
Under 14 CFR §43.13, anyone performing maintenance, alteration, or preventive maintenance must use the methods, techniques, and practices in the current manufacturer’s maintenance manual or Instructions for Continued Airworthiness — or another method acceptable to the FAA Administrator. The word “current” is doing a lot of work in that sentence: a superseded revision doesn’t satisfy the rule, even if the physical document looks identical to the one your shop has always used.
The FAA expands on why this matters in Advisory Circular 20-77A, Use of Manufacturers’ Maintenance Manuals, which notes that modern materials, fabrication methods, and increasingly sophisticated systems require the specific instructions manufacturers publish — general mechanical knowledge isn’t a substitute.
What This Means for Your Documentation Library
Two things tend to trip up operators:
- Revision drift. A manual purchased years ago may no longer reflect the latest airworthiness directives, service bulletins, or procedure changes folded into current revisions.
- Volume gaps. Larger maintenance manuals are frequently split into multiple volumes (systems, structures, wiring), and it’s easy to end up with one volume but not the companion volumes referenced throughout it.
