Aircraft Maintenance Manuals and FAA Part 43: What Owners and Mechanics Need to Know
September 30, 2026A Pilot Operating Handbook (POH) can look intimidating the first time you open it, but it follows a predictable structure. Once you know what lives in each section, you can find any number you need in seconds. Here is how to read a POH the way experienced pilots do.
Why the POH is organized the way it is
Most modern general aviation handbooks follow the GAMA standard, so the same nine sections appear in the same order across aircraft. That consistency is the whole point: switch airplanes and the information is still where you expect it. See real examples in our POH collection.
Section 1 – General
Basic descriptive data, dimensions, and definitions. Skim it once when you are new to the type.
Section 2 – Limitations
The numbers you must never exceed: airspeed limits, weight limits, engine limits, and approved operations. These are typically FAA-approved. Know them cold.
Section 3 – Emergency Procedures
Memory items and checklists for engine failure, fire, electrical problems, and more. Review this section regularly, not just before a checkride.
Section 4 – Normal Procedures
Your everyday checklists, from preflight to shutdown, with recommended speeds for each phase of flight.
Section 5 – Performance
Takeoff and landing distances, climb rates, and cruise data. Learn to interpolate the charts for your actual weight, altitude, and temperature.
Section 6 – Weight & Balance
The equipment list and the data you need to calculate that your loading stays within the center-of-gravity envelope for every flight.
Sections 7–9 – Systems, Handling, and Supplements
Section 7 explains how the aircraft’s systems work. Section 8 covers handling, servicing, and maintenance. Section 9 (Supplements) is critical and often overlooked: it contains approved data for optional equipment such as avionics and autopilots installed in your airplane.
Put it into practice
The best way to learn a handbook is to use it with structured study material. Pair your POH with a pilot training manual for your aircraft, or browse the full manuals store by make and model.
Note: Reproduction manuals are provided for reference, training, and historical purposes. They do not replace the current FAA-approved documents required for legal flight operations.
